Beco Pet Food - Review!

Beco Pet is an eco-friendly pet brand that Rio and I have been working with for over a year and we love them! Rio met the team and Crufts and we have received lots of lovely toys over this time!

Recently the Beco team got in touch with us to ask if we would like to try out their brand new eco-friendly dog kibble - so of course we agreed! They kindly sent us some samples of their 3 flavours that we tried out at the beach, this is what Rio thought of the food.

Firstly, we tried out th MSC Certified Cod & Haddock which, as the name implies, is sustainably sourced and very yummy! Rio absolutely loved this, fish is his favourite and this did not disappoint. I always find fishy kibble the best for training because it's very smelly - not the best for fresh breath!

Next up; Free Range Chicken ! There is lots of chicken kibble on the market, but I can't say I've ever heard of free range chicken kibble. Rio isn't a fussy eater, this food was no exception. However, I think that all dogs would enjoy the flavour and owners will enjoy feeding their dog an eco-friendly food!

We interviewed the founder, George, about Beco!

1. What makes Beco Food for Dogs so unique compared to other dog food brands? Beco Food for Dogs contains the best ingredients we could find. All the ingredients are human grade, it's grain free and we only use fresh meat. But what makes us really different from the rest of the industry is our new approach to sourcing ingredients. We have focused on food provenance, sourcing free-range chicken, Marine Stewardship Council-certified cod and haddock and wild boar, and fruits and vegetables that have been sourced and farmed in the U.K. rather than abroad. We are the only dog food to use wild boar as a single meat source, and the only dry dog food to be MSC-certified in Europe, and we have pioneered the use of free-range chicken over intensively reared chicken. Essentially, our food is not only better for your dog but also better for the environment.

2. What are the health benefits of Beco food? We only use fresh meat and we don't use any meat meals, dried meats, dehydrated meats, or meat derivatives. Traditionally, in the pet food industry, dry dog food has been made from meat meal. Meat meal is basically everything that would not be used or eaten by humans, for example fur, feathers, claws, etc. This in itself is not a bad thing because a dog in the wild would be eating these items, but it's what happens next in order to get it into a powdered form, that is so important. In most cases, the food is cooked at about 350 degrees, leaving a protein powder with limited nutritional value, which is not easy to digest for the dog. We have focused on using fresh meat which is more digestible, more natural, more nutritious and is only cooked at temperatures of up to 80 or 90 degrees.

3. What inspired you to branch out into dog food? How did you go about doing this? We built a brand based around producing ethically sourced, eco-friendly natural dog products and some of our Beco fans started sending in requests for us to produce dog food and treats that were ethically and sustainably sourced. We couldn't believe that there wasn't such a product on the market, but quite quickly we realised that while everyone was focused on high meat content, no one was really questioning where the ingredients came from. We questioned why, if you could buy free-range chicken for yourself, why couldn't you buy it for your dog? It was then a long and arduous two-year process to find the people who were willing to supply us with the necessary ingredients. We got there in the end.

4. Do you have any dogs? Does your dog eat Beco food? Yes, Tarka is our 18 month-old Labrador, and she's a great fan of our cod and haddock with kale and chickpeas recipe. We feed Tarka first thing in the morning for breakfast and and in the evening when we get back from work (because Tarka comes with me to work at the Beco office every day). She seems to be doing very well on it and people often remark on how shiny her coat looks. In fact, she was referred to the other day as "a slippery eel" (!) due to the glossiness of her coat. Ultimately, the proof is in the pudding and we find that dog owners really see a difference when they feed their dog Beco.

5. You are an eco-friendly brand, how does this apply to your dog food? We have really worked hard to focus on sourcing all our ingredients ethically and sustainably. For example, we have used MSC-certified cod and haddock, to conserve fish stocks for future generations. If we keep catching fishing the way we are, we won't be able to conserve fish stocks for future generations. Unless we fish sustainably, we will be the last generation to eat fish from our seas. Many people also ask me why we chose wild boar as a meat source. Well, apart from it being a great novel protein for dogs, it's also much more eco-friendly than using meat like lamb or beef. Sheep and cattle are four-stomach animals that emit a lot of methane, which is not great for the environment. Pigs have a reputation for being smelly, and wild boar in particular are a more 'eco' option. We also use fruit and vegetables farmed in the UK, compostible packaging and our Beco Pets Foundation gives five per cent of our company profits back to environmental causes.

6. Do you have any exciting news or upcoming projects you can tell us about? As a company that prides itself on product innovation and design, we have a number of products in the pipeline. With the success of the Beco food launch, we will be looking to expand in this direction.

Thank you for reading!
